You're too good for this world, and because of that the world will eventually crush you.

Paul Auster
About This Quote

The idea that you’re too good for this world and because of it the world will eventually destroy you is a very popular idea. It is especially popular among teens and young adults who know they can never be good enough for their more successful peers. This idea is so common because it’s easy to imagine. It’s easy to imagine being someone better than everyone else.

A world where the best of the best are the ones who are able to soar above everyone else. We want to be great, but we don’t want to be great at being mediocre. And so, we imagine ourselves as perfect beings who have risen above all others.

The irony, of course, is that the world doesn’t work that way. Right now, at this very moment, there are millions of people just like you who are doing their best to make something of themselves despite their circumstances.
